Should I negotiate my salary?


If you have done the research on the industry, position and the company and you believe there is room to negotiate a higher salary, inquire with the offering party about into what went into calculating the offer figure. It is perfectly appropriate to politely ask, “Where did the number come from?” “What did you count as my years of experience?” Be prepared to quantify your experience with the salary, and tell the story that goes with your desired number. Also keep in mind that you’ll be far more persuasive with the company 6-12 months on the job, so if you really want the job - there is opportunity make yourself indispensable and re-negotiate a raise once you’ve proven yourself just a bit down the line.
